Insurance Risk Data publishes non-life insurance investment report

Insurance Risk Data, the insurance data service linked to Insurance Asset Risk, has published its first annual non-life insurance research report covering European outsourcing and investment trends.

The Non-Life Insurance Report – European Asset Management Opportunities 2020 includes narrative analysis of a range of topics from outsourcing patterns and mandate managers, to new expectations non-life underwriters have of managers, the sector’s evolving interest in less liquid asset classes and portfolio optimisation, and comprehensive data on insurers’ underwriting performance.

The report has details on the type and general account size of the insurer, which Solvency II model it uses, and further details on the mandates for more than 600 individual insurers are given. These details variously include the manager and asset class it is hired for, commercial and other terms of engagement, and whether the delegation is occurring within or beyond the underwriter's group. For Lloyd’s syndicates, details of the managing agent are also given.

Data, the backbone of asset managers' strategic decisions, is the basis for charts on outsourcing patterns across Europe, and a sizing of non-life insurers’ growing interest in non-mainstream asset classes, categorised by the country of insurer.

The report draws from many sources including conversations with insurance company CIOs and Insurance Risk Data's database of over 2,750 European insurance undertakings.

Proprietary charts show insurers’ investment risk appetite by European country and year on year change in investment risk-taking; general account breakdowns by country, and by size of general account of insurers; year on year volatility in the solvency coverage of insurers; and 12-month growth/contraction in insurers’ investments in various asset classes. Further charts examine what the underlying drivers of investment risk are, for non-life insurers in specific countries.

The report has a chapter dedicated to ESG investing and how patterns of that activity are changing, rapidly, at non-life underwriters. It examines what approaches insurers are adopting – screening, engagement, exclusions– and gives details on individual insurers in each case.

A further chapter analyses the underwriting profitability, or otherwise, of Europe’s non-life insurers both by country of the insurer and by individual line of non-life business. Insurance Risk Data believes this should help enrich discussions asset managers have with Europe’s non-life industry.
