The better renewables become, the less insurers have appetite to invest

The better renewables get, the less insurers have appetite to invest in them, the audience at Insurance Asset Risk's investing in real assets conference will hear.

The event which takes place on 27 May, comprises four panels on the asset class including a session on investing in renewables to support the transition to a low carbon economy.

Panelists will discuss the rather ironic challenge they face as the renewable energy sector matures and hinders their appetite for investments.

Indeed, as the sector needs less subsidies from governments and is increasingly financed through private investments, insurers find that the credit quality of those assets have worsened. As a result, the risk return profile of such assets become less attractive than.... say... Oil & Gas.

The panel will be moderated by Jelle van der Giessen, chief investment officer at NN Group, and panellists will be:

  • Adil Jiwa, associate director for loan investments at Scottish Widows
  • Hayley Rees, head of investment strategy at the Pension Insurance Corporation
  • Prasun Mathur, head of private assets at Aviva UK
